Champagne Ladies was first performed at the Workhouse Theatre, Melbourne, on 17 June 1998 with the following cast:
NARELLE ... Miranda King
DARLENE ... Elizabeth Penny
WAITER ... Tim Constantine
Two society ladies sit down to a glass of champagne, after coming out from witnessing the worst performance of a well-known stage musical. Narelle purchased the tickets for both of them. Both try to hide their disappointment in the quality of the show.
Location
The cafe is located inside a well established major theatre in the heart of a large city.
Relationships
Darlene and Narelle are two dear friends with little in common except for the social set they circulate in and the shallow affection they painfully afford.
On Stage
This play is written around a very simple set of a theatre cafe. It's simplistic nature calls for nothing more than a cafe table, two chairs and the props required to tell the story; two salt and pepper grinders, two champage glasses, cafe menu, single flower in a vase and the tray the waiter carries ... oh yes, and the bill.
